P 38

Lockheed P 38 Lightning. AKA “the fork tailed devil”, this aircraft served primarily as a fighter, but also a dive bomber, level bomber, and recon. It always seemed odd to me that it could be an effective fighter with its two engines and weird shape, but it really kicked ass in WW2. Also surprisingly, it was considered to be very forgiving, from a mechanical standpoint. It was generally replaced by the P 51 mustang at the very end of the war.
